Progress Reports

Progress Report. 6
April 27, 2012

  1. I started the first painting in my new series at home and brought it in this week and finished it within a few days! I’m very happy with the pace I’m working at right now.  It is a relatively minimalistic painting of an abnormal giraffe with a simple pink background.
  2.  An issue that always comes up is how I’m going to fill in the background.  Whenever I start a new project, I always get too excited and dive headfirst into painting/creating the main object of the piece, and I forget that I should have done the background first.  With my giraffe painting, it was a very tedious task to paint around the giraffe while being careful not to paint over the fine lines.
  3. I’ve started on my next piece, which is a zebra.  Hopefully I can finish it within the next week.  I have yet to decide how many pieces this series is going to consist of.

Progress Report. 5
April 13, 2012

  1.  I finished my second piece.  I contemplated on making the background cleaner looking my painting it white or using oil-pastel, but I opted out of doing so.  I figured that using paint would throw off the balance of the mediums because the rest of it is in oil-pastel, but I also didn’t want to color the background with oil-pastel because it would simply waste too much time.
  2. I haven’t had many problems other than the fact that I wish the background looked cleaner.  It was a risky decision to use oil-pastel because the color gets everywhere, but I’m overall happy with the result.
  3. My next step is to start a new project that I have yet to decide on!

Progress Report. 4
March 16, 2012

  1. I restarted my second piece and am currently doing it with oil pastels.  The color of the paints simply were not as accurate as I had wanted them to be and I found that with oil pastels, it is much easier for me to control where I place the color and how intense the hue is.
  2. So far, the only problem I’ve had with this re-done piece is the amount of black there is in this piece.  Obviously it’s because there is a lot of shadow on the little boy’s head, but it just seems very bland and the black overwhelms the rest of the picture.
  3. My next step is to finish with this piece and begin outlining my third piece. The third piece will be my last.

Progress Report. 3
March 3, 2012

  1.  I began painting my second piece, although I feel like not much progress has been made.
  2. I think my progress has been slower because I’m really unsatisfied with my lack of skill in being able to paint the photo accurately.  I’m aware of the fact that my artwork completely does not have to be an accurate representation of whatever photo I’m using as “inspiration”, but I honestly do not think my personality will allow me to create something that is anything short of perfection (that is, perfection in my eyes).  It’s something I need to work on.
  3. My next step is to hurry up an figure out how to fix this issue, whether it is to change mediums or change the picture or just deal with what I already have.

Progress Report. 2
February 17, 2012

  1. I’m almost done with the first piece of my project.  I’ve also almost finished the sketching of my second piece.
  2. I had a hard time with the idea of creating different shades of color with oil pastel.  I figured that something was a bit off with this piece when I realized that there was such a stark contrast between the grass/weeds and the dirt.  It took a little while to figure out how to darken the greens in the picture, but I think I successfully did so.
  3. My next step is to complete this first piece and then figure out what medium I’m going to be using for my second piece.

Progress Report. 1
February 3, 2012

  1. I began working on my newest project.  It’s a multi-piece project.  I’ve started a pencil outline on most of them but added color (oil pastels) to only one of them.
  2. I was challenged with not knowing what mediums to use for the separate pieces.  I really wished that I had more experience with water color because I think that it’d look great for one of my pieces, but I’m afraid that I am just horrible with water colors so I chose to stay away from choosing that path.
  3. My next step is to start adding color to the second piece as I go more in depth with my first piece.

Progress Report. 8
January 6,2012

  1. I have finished with my afroman.
  2. I was faced with a challenge in the finishing stages of my afroman.  I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the background because every idea I had didn’t really excite me.  So, I ended up just cutting out afroman.
  3. My next step is to think of a new project and start that up in the meantime, I’m going to tak pictures of all my completed artwork.

Progress Report. 7
December 16, 2011.

  1. I’ve been working on Project 4 and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
  2. A challenge that I’ve faced with this project thus far is with my lack of technique in painting.  I’ve noticed that there needs to be some kind of chronology in which a picture is to be painted, specifically with this one, because after finishing painting it, my moon/afro didn’t exactly turn out the way I wanted it to.
  3. My next step is to possibly redo the moon/afro and being painting the background/face.

Progress Report. 6
December 2, 2011

  1. I’ve finished Project 3, and am still in the midst of working on my Project 2 (at home).
  2. A challenge that I’ve been facing is that my woodburner doesn’t work as well as I’d like.  This is making the process of finishing my Project 2 so much longer than I’d like.  I would buy another, better one, but I don’t know if I’m willing to invest that much money into something that I will most likely only be using for this project.  It’s a tough call, but I guess I’m going to have to work with what I have.
  3. My next step is to think of a new project to due, but in the meantime, I’ll be trying to get work done in my sketchbook.

Progress Report. 5
November 11, 2011

  1.  I’ve fully outlined an idea for Project 2 and have started working on it.
  2. The biggest challenge that I’m facing right now, is simply not being happy with my work.  Usually, especially in the beginning stages of a project, I’m excited to start it, but this time is different.  I’m guessing that it’s because I’m using the same materials that I’ve been using for a while.
  3. My next step is to make revisions to my Project 2 proposal, whether that means I change it completely, or make small adjustments to it.

Progress Report. 4
October 28, 2011

  1. I’ve started a few days ago and made a decent amount of progress.  Considering that I had to miss a few classes because of PSSA retakes, I got a good amount of work done.  I’ve finished painting the background on the canvas and I’ve also finished the first flower.
  2. A challenge that I’ve been already been faced with is my lack of satisfaction in my work.  Some about it my whole idea for this project simply doesn’t sit well with me, so I’m having ideas about changing it.  To what, I don’t know exactly.
  3. That brings me to my next step.  I want to figure out what it is that I don’t like about this project so far and change my project proposal to fit my new ideas.

Progress Report. 3
October 14, 2011

  1. I’ve just completely finished my first project.  It took much longer than I had expected, but I guess it’s worth it because I’m happy with the way it turned out.  Now I am in the process of sketching/outlining my next project, which I will create a Project Proposal for soon.
  2. The only challenge that I’ve faced with this project overall is time management.  It’s very hard to add so much detail in such a timely manner, but hopefully, that was a lesson learned from the first project and I can finish the next project in a shorter time period.
  3. My next step is to figure out exactly what I want to do for my next project, create an outline for myself, and bring in all the required materials.

Progress Report. 2
September 30, 2011

  1. I’ve finished painting the first flower in full detail and have outline the next two.  I’ve decided to only do three flowers because with the size that they are, combined with the size of the canvases, it’ll be too overwhelming to have more than three flowers.
  2. From my last progress report, I said that I really wanted to begin working at a more timely pace, but I’ve found that that is virtually impossible for me to do.  I think because of my need for perfection and my attention to detail, it makes it extremely hard for me to work faster without compromising the quality of my painting.
  3. My next step is to finish the project (painting the last two flowers) and also start on a new project that I have in mind already.  I’m crossing my fingers to finish this project by the end of next week.

Progress Report. 1
September 15, 2011

  1. I’ve been working on my small canvases. I finished painting the whole background and started on the first flower.  I haven’t exactly decided how many flowers I’m going to want to paint, but I will use my own judgement to determine that.
  2. I’ve learned that I need to work at a more timely pace.  I thought that finishing just the background for the first week would put me in a good spot for time, but seeing how quickly time goes by, I think I need to try and work faster.
  3. My next step is to finish most of the flowers by this week, or at least outline the rest of them with white paint so I know exactly what I’m going to work on next.
