My day started off with a regular routine of spending a few hours at church. I hurriedly went home by 12:50 pm to meet Nick and John at my house. We decided it was most convenient to meet at my house because the Gwynedd Valley station is literally right in my backyard. We got onto the 1:00 pm train and thus began our journey to Portfolio Day. One the train ride there, John, Nick, and I talked about how we, suburbians, have such easy access to the city, but we rarely ever take advantage of public transportation. We came to the conclusion that it was because of the money it requires, that we don’t utilize the different public transportations that are available to us.
In the days leading up to Portfolio Day, I didn’t have any expectations, really. I just pictured it as some sort of fair, where people would be carrying these massive pieces of artwork, and there would be colors flying everywhere. However, as we were walking to the Convention Center, I realized that there is only so much you are able to physically carry to the place and it’s more likely that I would not be seeing some crazy, cool stuff that day.
So we enter the hall in which the convention center is taking place, and it is just a huge room, filled with people standing around, waiting for their portfolios to be critiqued. It wasn’t a sight that drew me in and made me excited, but I decided that taking one trip around the room would possibly change my opinion.
It didn’t.
As Nick, John, and I made our trip around the room, we stopped to say hello to a few peers from school, asking how their critiques have been, curious as to what the representatives said to them. It was mainly all constructive criticism, but Annette and Michelle actually ended getting accepted to schools! It was when I heard this that I became a bit regretful that I didn’t bring any of my artwork. Had I known that it was possible for us to be accepted into schools at this Portfolio Day, I would have brought some artwork with me. The three of us simply thought that Portfolio Day was a day in which we could get some feedback and make an impression. Regardless, it made me happy to see how excited Annette and Michelle were about their waived applications.
The main thing that interested me all day at Portfolio Day were the people who were actually there. It was interesting to see the different kinds of personalities that were there, ranging from a girl who was in a costume and fake ears, to a put together and polished guy in a suit. I saw this and thought to myself, Where else would I be able to see these people in the same room, together. Overall, Portfolio Day wasa day that made an impression on me, but it definitely was not what I had expected.
